Well, I got the ARC-114 working. I had to add a mike preamp and I found that the mike from a general aviation headset won't do the job, with or without a preamp. The preamp I used was a Velleman kit I bought from Fair Radio. After I figured out you actually had to apply power to it and adjusted the output just right, the preamp combined with a Audio Technica ATR-20 500 ohm mike does the job. The preamp is easily capable of overdriving the ARC-114.
RF power output at 52.50 MHZ seems to be about 20 watts. During receive the set draws about 400 ma and during transmit about 2 amps, which is rather more than the 30W given in the specification.
I am assuming that the setup will work with my ARC-116; we will see. I already have found that the ARC-116 will operate down below the 225 MHZ bottom end of the military UHF band.
Maybe I'll do a little write up for Radionerds.com
