I have been using the 1N5711 Shottky since the 80's, when I bought a TS-930, for the detector to replace various germainiums. Distortion was measurably reduced and all subsequent rigs using discrete germainiums got the treatment..
They also helped the HRO-500. However I have not used them in place of a tube and dont have a good answer why not.
