I, too, have installed solid state rectifier diodes as substitutes for 5Y3's and the like. I plugged a store bought 5Y3 solid state sub into my National NC-155 and operated it like that back in the mid-70's. One night I switched it to "Standby" while I cooked dinner and watched TV. That smoked a resistor in the LO circuit and I'm sure that it led to the early demise of the filter cap as well. After trying to build solid state rectifier tube replacements including some power resistors I mostly went back to the original vacuum tubes. When David Ishmael did that with an NC-270 he ended up adding a separate circuit board with enough power resistors to get the job done - it is not easy to get them crammed into the tube socket.

I do have a few neat little assemblies that consist of octal plugs with aluminum covers and 1N34's installed inside - the big old fashioned 1N34's. Presumably they are intended as replacements for the 6H6 or something like that but I have never used them as such, nor looked up the pin out to see what they might fit . At 25 cents each they were more than worth it for the octal plugs.
