I like good coffee but its a necessity to me so I will drink
instant if nothing better is available. I have a coffee grinder
and an automatic Chemex type coffee maker. The quality of the
coffee is all important. At work at one time I completely
disassembled and cleaned the automatic coffee maker because the
coffee tasted like ground cardboard. Turned out it was the cheap
coffee the company was buying.
At home I find that fresh ground makes a difference. I use
about half and half french roast and standard roast. The
temperature of the water is important also, can't be boiling or
it will make the coffee bitter. I have, however, made decent
"cowboy" coffee by keeping the pot on simmer rather than letting
it boil. BTW, Yuban was the first coffee to be sold as
pre-roasted beans. The name means Yuletide Banquet. It became
known as "cowboy coffee" because it was much more convenient than
using green coffee beans. It was a popular West coast brand when
I was a kid.
I don't much like Starbucks coffee, not just too strong or
bitter but something else is wrong with it.
