I'll admit to having two pleasant experiences relative to shipping costs on ebay earlier this year.

In one case the seller of a BC-348 agreed to ship it to another and much closer address but could not get the ebay shipping calculator to reflect not shipping it all the way across the country.  So she agreed to let me pay the exorbitant shipping charges via Paypal but to refund me the substantial difference between actual and calculated.  

In another case I complained that the seller of a few lightweight items did not offer combined shipping, which made the shipping cost considerably more than the cost of the items.  He replied that he was new to ebay and agreed to provide me with a substantial refund if I went through with the purchase.

I had my doubts about this approach but it worked out just fine.
