I look at those old "conversion books" and wonder what they were thinking-if anything. It's like a post war version of "CB mods"!
Perhaps It may have been from the lack of information about the type of antenna that the ARC-5 antenna was designed to match?I've heard old timers call them TVI generators and Qrp rigs. Neither of which is the the case if they are matched and tuned properly.I get 50+ watts from the stock bc-696A and bc459A running on the BC-456 /dynamotor on about 25 volts..I've seen too many mods with the roller removed, the variometer link connected directly to the  antenna terminal replaced with a SO 239.  It just isn't going to work like that!
Were the service  manuals rare back then?..or was it that no one bothered to read them?
