I don’t think they banned smoking in USAF aircraft until the late eighties.  I hope I didn’t just incriminate anyone I flew with if that wasn’t the case, hi!

Col. Paul Tibbets in his (auto)biography said he smoked cigarettes while flying. He must have not been too worried about any gas fumes.
