Re power supplies…...

Sometimes you luck out.  About 25 years ago at a hamfest  I came across largish, very heavy black box, had a CB on the front and more or less standard AC and DC connectors on the back.  
No name or other identification anywhere except for “80 Amps” and “Warning! Two Man Lift” silkscreened on the front.  Asked the seller what it was and he replied he knew nothing  about
it or it’s history but for $20 It was mine.  Turned out to be a 28 vdc supply, HEAVY duty transformer, full-wave rectifier using SCRs and an LC smoothing filter.  Regulation and voltage control is accomplished by varying the firing angle on the SCRs.  Only thing that had to be replaced was the fan on the SCR heat sink.  This box will start and run anything and everything I’ve ever 
thrown at it including BC-375 and ART-13 dynamotors.  No documentation though and I hope I never have to troubleshoot the internal PC board that controls the SCRs.
