DaveYou could replicate the functionality of the HV regulator with a high voltage FET or bipolar, a zener a few resistors and maybe a cap or two. Add another 39cent transistor and three resistors and you get SC protection.
I would rather do that than use a more specificity- less generic perhaps hard to find ( in the future) part although I do admit use of a special high voltage regulator does significantly reduce design time, design risk and circuit board space.
I do not mean to be overly critical here. I was burnt once in industry by using a similar rather nice but rather specialized part whihc then became unavailable so I am rather serious about avoiding parts that are not widely available.
For quality one it does not matter. Still if I design and build something for personal use I like the idea of being able to repair it in the future with easily available parts.
