I recently took apart the ignition switch for my airplane in an attempt to figure out why the Left mag was cutting out. In the process I lost both of the contact springs, and while I finally found one of them I had to procure a replacement for the other. I tried a magnet and the vacuum cleaner, but that did not help other than to locate a rivet squeezer set that I had no idea I had lost.
For some years now I have saved the plastic tubs that come with foods such as butter, margarine, lunchmeat, and pork BBQ in order to hold removed screws and nuts when I am working on something. I occasionally bestow them on friends that need them. I recall one guy removing a radio from his airplane instrument panel while holding the screws in his mouth. Horrified, I ran to get one of the margarine tubs for him.
But following the ignition switch disaster I have resolved to move to the next stage past margarine tubs and use one of those clear plastic "shoebox" storage boxes as a "terrarium" where such things can be dismantled. The screws, springs, and gremlins can caper and play all they want inside those enclosures but they ain't getting out.
