I measure very close to 8 3/4" from the mounting surface to the top of 
the transmitter, taking into account the snap slides and
studs for the tube covers.

In my shelf, I made the transmitter bay 10" tall, to allow some head 
room for ease of swapping transmitters and provide
some air flow.

Remember, though, that the transmitter has a flip up lid at the rear, 
with a mirror to see the eye tube for calibration.
When open, this adds another 2" to the height, but add add some extra to 
get your hand in there to open the lid.
In my case, I wanted to keep the overall height of the rack down, so 
decided not to have that option.
