Thanks for all the kind replies guys! The sum total of the replies seems to be that no one has some across any easy, "spray-on and wipe off" solution. I tried soaking in hot, soapy water. That was useless. I tried Pinesol. Ditto. I'm going to do some experimenting and I'll report back.

Hi Jim! Yes it is like the plastic de-polymerizes ??My teletype 31's keys seem to exhibit it the most.. Do not know if itis the plastic's consistency or... if because it was a 31 got stowed in an off the way cruddy hot place? I am NOT familiar with Bakelite doing this though.Kudos to the person that warned about 407 on Bakelite. The only trick I ever found to make it glossy after someone 409'ed it was to apply a thin coat of glossy to the knob. This only works really well though when the item is behind glasson display, as if you were to use the knob any amount the gloss would wear though. Ed Sharpe Archivist for SMECC www.smecc.org

I've been told that the white stuff is a component of the plastic that
oozes out, and that it can be softened with heat from a hair dryer.
Haven't tried that myself.
