"I have one question, though. In several places through the narrative, the
aircraft being discussed is ID'd as an "FA". "

I had not even read the piece published online; those "FA" should be F-4. That's a typo, although not mine. Somebody must have retyped the article from the magazine rather than asking me to provide a text copy. They never asked me for it and must have went direct to Air Classics.

That article was fun to write and was a "freebie" in more ways than one. I ended up writing a large (4500 word) article for Wings/Airpower magazine on WWII engine supercharging. I was discussing things with my friend Ward Duncan and in the process realized that I had collected the info I needed to write another article, on Duncan's Hot Rod. So I put that article together quite quickly and with not much added effort, while the Supercharging article still needed a lot of work before I got it published in Nov 2001.

And it was a "freebie" in that Air Classics never paid me a dime for it. I considered the pleasure that Ward and the other men of the 9th PRS in seeing their story told to be more than ample payment. But I have not written anything else for Air Classics, either.

By the way, a few years later I was reading an article about the early U-2 program and found that one of those involved was none other than the pilot who was flying the Hot Rod the day the Japanese shot it up

Glad y'all liked it!
