Building a BFO for that GE multiband receiver was one of my very first ham radio projects. I found a circuit for a BFO using a single PNP transistor and 455 KHZ IF coil in an old issue of 73 Magazine and tried building it using Radio Shack parts. Did not work, so I called my Mom and asked her to mail me a big old NOS Millen IF transformer I picked up when the university threw some stuff out. It worked! What an accomplishment!
Then I found out about selectivity. That GE covers 160 KHZ to 18 MHZ plus the FM band - and a ham band was about 1/2 inch wide or less. I managed to tune in SSB with it just once. I still have that radio and was tickled when last year one showed up on that TV show "The AmeriCans" being used by spies to receive Soviet messages.
I next bought an assortment of tube type IF coils from Meshna and made a few more oscillators. I need to find where I put those because I need them to install in a GRC-9 receiver that is missing some.
