In my own case, I was especially intrigued by military gear because of the very high quality
components most of them were fitted with.
In addition, I thoroughly enjoy the historical connection to all of it.
To me, the top quality mil gear beats any commerical gear all hollow.
My first mil gear, a BC-348 with BC-946B "Q-5er" was a real pleasure for me to operate. It
just sat there and did its job. I no longer had to fight with my receiver, nor compensate for its
faults. I just USED it.
The RAL-7 I followed that with simply confirmed my experiences with mil gear. It simply sat
there and WORKED. Reliably, without fuss, always. I could "hear" anything on the RAL-7 that
I could hear with much later rigs.
In fact, I never turned the RAL-7 off once in 8 years. Then turned it off to check its tubes,
found nothing out of order, so I turned it back on and left it for another 4 years.
