Quit judgeing work of 70 years ago by what you think today.  After the war 
and into the early 1950s  people wanted to get on the air, had very little 
money, and used what they could.  The command sets were cheap and plentiful. 
Great way to get started.  There are probably more "heavilly modified" 
command sets than there are unmodified ones.
