> I remember talking to Aircraft Radio Corp designers back in the 1970s when they were designing solid-state versions of some of their equipment and one of them told me that while transistors were smaller and used no filament power, at least at that time they were not a lot better than tubes and blew out more easily. Recall that when a Soviet pilot defected to Japan with his MIG fighter, western technicians could not make up their minds when they looked at the tube-using electronics whether the Soviets were 'way behind the west or used tubes because they are less subject to EMP shock.
When I got out of the Navy in ‘67 there were still a lot of tubes flying around in Navy planes. The military continues to procure outdated technology because readiness is prime while the pork $$$ barrel bureaucracy is playing catch up.
