[ARC5] why solid state command gear?

Well, one reason is that aside from availability and reliability the 1 volt tubes are not very impressive performers in the first place as far as I can see.  It would be nice to be able to crank up an RT-70/GRC or a PRC-10 or even a URC-11 and have it work properly for a while.
