Because certain tubes are getting harder and harder to find....like the 1L6 for instance. 
Tubes for the SCR-183, for instance. The 10 used in the BC-375/191 for instance. Etc.

I have a pair of Tubesters here, somewhere, which I got out of a used Heathkit VTVM I 
bought from University surplus, and never liked them, so switched back to tubes.

I see this thread as beginning an experimentation process to develop plug-in replacements 
to enable us to use that old gear as it was intended to be used, with no modifications.
