Charlie, W8CFO wins the cigar for locating the article and citation: "Solid State Q5er" in Ham Radio magazine August 1969, pp. 20-25!
This is probably the article that Ian Johnson originally stated he thought was published in Short Wave magazine.
Any way, I am now able to read and study the article.
Many Thanks to Charlie and the Forum!
I'm particularly interested in a possible solid state substitute for the noisy 12K8 mixer tube. In the above referenced article the Mixer portion was replaced by a 2N1639 and the Oscillator portion was replaced by a 2N384. By comparison the Mixer tube (6SA7) in the BC-348 that Wayne referenced earlier today was replaced with two 2N1466As. A 6BE6 Mixer has been previously replaced with the LM-1496.
I'm in contact with Edward Allison who sells the 1L6 solid state replacements on eBay that Ken Gordon has purchased tried with good success. Edward believes he can use the same dual gate MOSFET he uses in the solid state 1L6 to make a solid state 12K8 replacement.
I'll keep the Forum posted on any success with this development.
Respectfully,
Phillip W4RTX
