A guy I used to work with said his brother had converted an R-392 to solid state and it would run on two 9VDC batteries. Given that the set already runs on 24 VDC I would think that converting it to solid state would be easier than most tube sets.
Also, back in the 1970's there was a company making "Fetrons", solid state plug in replacements for tubes like 12AT7's and 12AU7's. I looked into it when someone suggested we use Fetrons in B-52 bleed air controllers.
There are Fetrons for sale on ebay.
