[ARC5] Transistorized ARC-5 Receiver

There is a fellow who sells reguarly on eBay, offering solid-state versions of the 1L6 to
Zenith Transoceanic owners.

He builds his 1L6s within a glass minature (9 or 7 pin) tube envelope.

I have bought one of his 1L6s for my AN/GRC-109 receiver (R-1004) in order to preserve
my 1L6s (I have two). I can attest that his solid-state version works far better than the 1L6
tube ever did!

I then asked him to make me a solid-state version of the 1T4 for use in the RF amplifier
stage of my R-1004. He did so, and that, too, made a huge difference in how well the
receiver operates.

For one thing, keying the T-784 no longer overloads the receiver, nor pulls the HFO any
more. In addition, the receiver sounds far quieter and more "responsive" to signals than
before.

Both of his solid-state equivalents required NO changes to the circuitry: one simply plugs
them in in place of the vacuum tubes.

If a quick search on eBay does not turn up his name or e-mail address, I'll dig into my files
and find that for anyone who might be interested.

>From what little I learned of him, he is, apparently, an electrical engineer and knows exactly
what he is doing.

His products most certainly bear this out.

>From his responses to me, I would think that we may be able to talk him into making
solid-state versions of the octal tubes used in our receivers. I am very curious about the
results of such.
