I shipped an R-390 to Japan using a cardboard box with white packaging Styrofoam between the radio and the cardboard and a piece of plywood just under the top for reinforcement. Seems to have worked Okay; the buyer did not complain. Could be that heavy radios are too hard to throw across the room or dropkick into the truck.

Worst packaging job ever was a HW-18 that the seller wrapped in paper - just paper - stuck the mike inside the radio and sent it that way. It survived seemingly Okay. But the Command Set transmitter mounted on a rack that was put in a cardboard box with balled up newspapers as cushioning arrived so badly damaged that I have not even begun to work on it. Even figuring out what to do to fix the bent case will be a challenge. And the cardboard box was not hurt.

I recently bought a BC-348 on ebay that was shipped in a large Styrofoam box that splits into two halves, top and bottom, and I have to admit it did quite well.
