Relative to the NC-173 stability, one of the reasons I bought a National NC-155 for my first communications receiver was a review in a 1960 vintage magazine.

They raised the front of the receiver an inch or so above the operating desk and let it go.  That 1/8 inch thick steel front panel and other design features did the job; the tuned in frequency did not change.
