Lots of guys collect military vehicles and put radios in them to make them complete. We, on the other hand buy military vehicles to house our precious radios, which, no matter how you look at it, makes us look a bit more looney.

Yes.
There is nothing unusual about collecting armor. Like collecting aircraft, it's just expensive.

So, the SCR-508/528/608/628 was in use fairly early in the war and well could have been in North Africa in 1942.
Back in the early 1980's at the famous TRW Swap Meet near LAX I was present at an auction of items that had been donated to the TRW Radio Club. They held up one of the 508/608 types receivers and asked for a bid. The response from the crowd was that you could hear crickets chirping. Then a man stepped forward and offered $5 for it. Everyone turned to look at the obvious nutcase, who explained that he was buying all he could find, to install in his tank collection. He was besieged with offers from the crowd to sell more of the radios.
He collects tanks. When I think of that I feel like us radio guys are not so crazy. In fact, no more than 20 miles from where I sit the owner of Knight Armament has a large collection of armored combat vehicles. Maybe he is the same guy.
