[ARC5] [BoatAnchors] Question for Smart People: IGBT Transistors

At one time the company I worked for (in the 1980's), Avantek, now defunct, had a program to develop the IMFET which was an internally matched FET power amplifier. I.e. a power FET module with 50 ohm in/out impedance at uWave frequencies. They could never get the recipe right and some serious $ went down the tubes and within a few years the company was 2 weeks away from not meeting payroll when HP bought the company mainly for Avantek's silicon Fab and more likely the GaAs Fab. These two processes are now owned by Avago/ Broadcom.
I hope someone writes an up to date history of Silly-con Valley. Ampex is gone but the company sign remains on Hy 101 as an historic landmark.
One of the sidelights of my technical education at Electronic Technical Institute in Denver CO, now also gone, was that we had a bit of history lessons when we learned about Volta, Ampere, Coulomb, Henry, Farad, Orstead, Ohm, Tesla, Bell, Watt, Armstrong, Maxwell, Smith, Shottky, Lang, etc.. I'll bet few college grads in the RF/mW field even know who their parameters are named after. I was always impressed that there were real people who investigated, theorized, and proved their concepts and were accepted by the scientific community of their times.
You don't hear much anymore about this stuff . Now it's all about the next smart phone.
And I'll bet my phone is even dumber than what AB5S has!

Correction: There is no such thing as an "IGFET." I meant to say "IGBT."
