That is a great idea! When the 1MHZ calibration oscillator for my SG-297 quit - and killed every replacement crystal I put in it. - I built a direct plug in replacement using a 1MHZ IC oscillator powered by a 7805 regulator, all built into a crystal oven case. That was all it took - although in that case the 1MHZ signal fed a harmonic oscillator that seems to have taken care of the waveform issue.
I believe David Stinson has pioneered the use of the oscillators you describe as crystal replacements in ARC T-11 and T-13 VHF transmitters.
