I'll add about three comments to what Mike has written.

1) The BC-451-A can be easily modified to function in place of the
C-29/ARC-5 by making only three changes.
     a) Remove the wire from J55 Pin 6.
     b) Disconnect the common terminals of S52 from Ground (chassis).
     c) Connect Pin 6 to the common terminals of J55.
After doing that, the BC-451-A will function in place of a C-29, plus if
the pins in the PL-153-(*) and the 9585/6962 are connected 1 to 1, 2 to 2,
etc. the Mic and Key jacks will be active. Note that contacts 5 are not used.

2) Converting a PL-153-A or PL-153 to a 9585 or a 6962 is probably doable
as it only involves moving one contact.. But a simpler solution is to start
with a different connector. There are at least three slightly different
19-socket connectors used in various A.R.C. Type 12 installations, 12139,
14320 and 16115. They can be converted to have a compatible 18-socket insert to
replace the 6962 or 9585 by simply grinding off the alignment key and
plugging Socket M (Type 12 connector contacts are lettered instead of numbered).
Note however that all of the Type 12 connectors have a back shell with a
rubber grommet in the center. They can be fairly easily converted to accept
the cable gland but converting them to look like the open-wire types would be
considerable work.

3) However, the 9589 or 9377 12-socket connector is another matter.
First, at most only one socket in the PL-154-(*) is in the same relative location
as a socket in the 9589 or 9377. So converting it wouldn't be practical.
Contacts 1 through 7 on the ARC-5 rack are in the same relative positions as
4 through 11 in the PL-153-(*). Contact 8 may be in the same position as
15 in the PL-153-(*). But I don't think that the remaining four line up with
any existing ones. If they did, you might be able to plug a 9585/6962 into
the 12-pin connector on a transmitter rack. And probably a PL-153-(*).
Which would have been a big no-no. Unfortunately, the 12-socket connectors
used with the Type 12 have a smaller diameter shell and insert.
