The slope of the skirt of the IF can be used as a simple FM detector.

Subject: [ARC5] FM BCB on Type 12 Receivers
I have tuned in a commercial broadcast FM radio station on a ARC Type 12 receiver. I tuned in a station up around 107.something MHZ and was confused. My brother then told me that was a FM station some distance away that normally could not be picked up with typical FM stereo receivers. Local stereo enthusiasts were sometime dismayed to pick up the station, thinking that it was an image before finding out it was a real signal.
