The VOR receiver, in the case of most comm/nav equipment like the Type 12 is also the comm receiver and has a standard AM detector.  Slope tuning a broad bandwidth does a reasonable job, as others point out.  What might be intetesting would be tapping "audio" from after the 9960khz FM discriminator in the VOR converter section.
