Agreed, and while I'm not one for arguing with the
design engineers, I make an exception in this case.
I don't believe the installed snubber as effective
as a snubber for the contacts themselves. Moreover,
R120 is grounded, while the contacts themselves of
course have no Lo-Z path to the grounded end of
R120. The arc potential is between the contacts;
not the contacts and ground.
Therefore, whatever the actions of the original
snubber, it cannot be as effective as one at the contacts.
