I found it interesting to see how on the P-47, even as big as it is, they put the 274-N modulator or the 522 dynamotor up front and the radios aft of the cockpit.

Note that with the ZB system they did change the frequencies and directional codes on a scheduled basis, multiple times a day.  I have no idea how they accommodated that in fighter aircraft.
