The RT-91/ARC-2 is a 2 - 9 Mhz (in 1 MHz bands) AM/CW transceiver manufactured by Collins. It uses the usual Collins conversion scheme of a variable IF and a fixed conversion oscillator. The difference in this case is that the variable IF is not converted down to a fixed IF. This makes the receiver section quite broad as except for a multisection tuning of the variable IF doesn't provide much selectivity (if I recall without the manual being in front of me, the IF tunes from 0.5 to 1.5 Mhz) On CW therefore there is no traditional BFO but a 0.5 to 1.5 Mhz tracking oscillator ganged to the VFO. For transmit the conversion is done in reverse to get the output frequency equivalent to the receive frequency. The transceiver also has the traditional Collins presettable, motorized channel system with 8 channels.
My completely original, stock ARC-2 run from 28 VDC with the original, internal dynamotor puts out 40 w on both AM and CW. The finals are a pair of 1625's, modulated by another pair. On CW I use it with an external active tuneable audio filter to make it usable even under fairly crowded band conditions. On AM it is hard to avoid adjacent stations bleeding through when propagation is longer than local. It is a neat radio, though... Here is a short description and photos of it here:
