[ARC5] Chassis cleaning - Tap vs de-ionized water.

Boiling water will remove chlorine and some permanent hardness. The
metallic (mostly magnesium and calcium) salts are deposited on the
vessel its boiled in. That's what causes the crust on tea kettles. After
boiling for a couple of minutes allow the water to cool and then decant
(pour off) the clear water. Boiling also removes organic matter which
is coagulated and settles out while the water cools. Dipping out the
water leaves the sediment.
This will NOT remove the stuff currently used (chloramine) for
disinfecting drinking water in many areas. That requires the use of a
reverse osmosis or ion exchange water purifier like a Brita filter. The
combination of a Brita and boiling will result in water that is pure
enough for almost any use.
The only disadvantage of tap water is deposits of salts and dirt
left when it dries. That can be eliminated by a rinse in distilled or
filtered water or even just blowing off as much as possible with
compressed air.
Note that the combination of a Brita filter and boiling will
produce water entirely pure enough for color photographic processes.
The Brita will remove quite small particulate matter.
