I believe the reason many hams disconnect that filament arrangement is the fear that the AC 
will modulate the VFO frequency.

In my experience, it does no such thing and SHOULD be left competely intact.

I'm with Mike on this one too: leave it strictly alone.

The ARC engineers thought of everything, many of which no ham would have even a clue 
about.

In fact, many of us are still learning about some of those subtle things that the ARC boys did 
to make their gear work so well for so long.
