The roller contact is present. The soldered tap is obviously factory
installed and is about two-thirds the way up the coil, counting from
the socket end, which is the 'earthy' end.

The situation is as you describe it.

I've just now checked the wiring, and there is no doubt that the fixed
tap connects to the final tank variable capacitor - and to nothing else.

In the manual, the transmitter's schematic does in fact show the tap,
with the unused portion of the winding shown as a single loop.

So, was this outer winding and its former simply a stock item that
was used for other frequency ranges, or was there some reason for
tapping the capacitor down the winding?
I guess we'll never know.
