With coil box pulled out - no short to ground from tank capacitor
plates - a hard
short when re-inserted. That's as it should be.
Shorted the RF ammeter - still no output (5 ohm dummy load didn't get warm).
Connected ARC-5 TX capacitor in series with dummy load - ditto.
Changed the final tube - plate current dropped to about 5mA - dud tube? - ditto.
Changed tube again (third one) - plate current back up to 25mA, no dip - ditto.
Placed a 27K resistor across the 20K grid bias resistor - bias was about halved
and the note sounded awful - ditto.
Realised that I had forgotten to jumper wire 20 to 22 (for Voice) in the power
supply at the end of the PL-64 cable - thought I had done it. Being unjumpered
effectively put R103 (10K (20W?) mod transformer artificial load in CW mode)
in series with the PA plate supply.
Jumpered 20-22 and plate current now 50mA or so (more like I would expect),
but still unable to dip with tuning control. Rechecked continuity of
coil - all 3
windings intact.
Something just dawned on me. The outer winding on the final tank coil (the
one with the roller contact) has a hard-wired tap about two-thirds the way up
the winding (counting from the socket end). The circuit diagram doesn't show
such a tap. Anyone else with a C-385 coil set who can check that this tap
should be present? Wondering whether someone fitted some other radio's
coil former.
