First method won't work. It relies on the grid-plate capacitance of
the final tube(s), which will effectively be in series with the output
tank. That very small capacitance in series with a tank will detune
it severely.

Second method is much better. Feed your sig gen to the antenna
socket and put your 'scope from final plate(s) to ground. Peak up
the tank for max signal to get a ballpark setting.
