Having been involved, in one way or another, with the two-way radio industry for all but 3-years, starting in March 1965 until officially retiring in 2010, I have seen a lot of mice, rats, and even snakes, "fried" in base stations. I have also seen a LOT of damage done by mice and rats building nests in base stations and urinating on wiring, circuit boards, and so forth.
Fire ants, and even "regular" ants, love the 60 Hz AC and get into all sorts of base stations and repeaters. I even had fire ants completely fill a 450 MHz cavity attached to a community repeater!
Squirrels are also a problem especially where wires and cables are concerned. They can make fast work of control lines, antenna cables, and even AC lines.
