[ARC5] Just Wodering!

Halsey learned to fly at Pensacola in the early 30's.

When did navel aircraft get radios. How did they communcate air to air in the early 30's

It's my impression the ARC-5s were not used in the bi-planes of the 30's. I believe the F2F and F3F had redios. What were they?
