The picture I saw was of a BC-620 set up to be used as a backpack like a BC-1000, not as a suitcase.  I have no idea where the power for it came from.

And you are right that the BC-1000 should have been able to talk to the tanks.  As it was, in Normandy they attached telephones to the back of the tanks to enable ground troops to talk to the tankers via the intercoms.  I'm sure it would have been so much nicer to just keep your head down and tell the tankers where the enemy fire was coming from.
