Well, couple of observations I guess. I'm working on my last "welfare
overhaul". That is, an outside job that I figure I'll net about
$3.10/hr for the labor and break-even on parts. Not complaining, just
closing the door, so to speak. Its only an SX-99, and not rocket
science but some of these things have been treated rather badly over the
years. Anyway, this will be the last outside project, save a couple of
potential "already promised" from friends. Licensed in 1958, so that
puts me in the OT category. Funny, though... I don't feel that way at
all! A rather large portion of my operational MIL stations and probably
30 ham receivers were sold off a few years ago. Missed sorely, but no
regrets. I arguably made a few bucks on the deals but I agree that
times are changing and the $2000 75A4 is all but gone. A friend had
collected the Gold-Dust twins and a bunch of S-Line gear. He has tried
but failed to get anywhere near what he paid for it all.
What I retained and what I have collected over the past 5-6 years, the
XYL could probably handle OK with the help of a few true friends. The
thing is here, I have far, far too much bench stock of parts, tubes, and
those things we can't just toss. Probably we all do. I think I may
have a real hard look and decide what will be used in the next 5-10
years (if I'm fortunate) and what will not. I've given up on ham fests
as a place to sell parts. It just doesn't work around here (MD/DC).
Tubes? Heh... Best maybe to inventory and offer to an on-line toober?
Over the years I have availed myself of the divested treasures of others
and now its coming up my turn, I guess..... Regarding museums, I've
given a fair amount to several aero museums and enjoy doing so. That
said, maybe, maybe 5%-10% of the material was ever actually ever
displayed and I know stuff sometimes goes out the back door to the
insiders.
