Both the AN/PRC-74 and -77 work OK without a FT-230-A.  :-)

RT-794B/PRC-74B     2- 18 MHz  AME, USB, CW  (Hughes)
RT-841/PRC-77      30- 76 MHz  FM            (RCA and others)
