Thank you both for the thoughts.

Regarding the fitting of a 2 Meg pot in place of the 12A6 grid
resistor, I'm reluctant to do that, because it's too much of a
modification in a set that is pretty original. Also, there's nowhere
to fit another pot.

I think I'll fit a 620 ohm pot on the LM-380 board for (preset) level
adjustment and hide that board in the receiver's outboard power
supply, then use just the RF/IF gain control that is already in the
set for audio level adjustment.

I think my question's been answered.
