I wholeheartedly endorse the ARRL's "Understanding Amateur Radio" by George
Grammer (1963 and 1971 editions). The explanations are excellent and more
conversational/tutorial in nature than the Handbook which is more of a
reference. I enjoy re-reading sections as a refresher even after 55 years
as a ham and 45 as an EE. Copies are available on Amazon for $5 and about
the same at hamfests.
Example- The section on VFO output coupling begins - "You can ruin a good
oscillator by the way you take power from it." - goes on to discuss the
effect of loading, advantage of an untuned buffer stage, etc. - and ends
with "A really good VFO setup will let you short-circuit its output without
any observable change in frequency."
