Yes. I have done this in the past with a Globe King 500C which ran only AM (and CW) not 
SSB.

The way I did it was to turn off my receiver's BFO, then use the transmitters VFO as a BFO 
to exactly tune in the SSB signals I was wanting to work.

Then I turned the receiver's BFO back on, checked my tuning of the SSB signal, and then 
started communicating.

I used to check into an SSB net this way, and did it for at least a year before someone on 
the net told me after the net, "Ken, you have an awful lot of carrier in there." I replied, "Well, 
I had BETTER have!" He stammered a bit, then said, "You mean you're on AM?!?!?!?!"

I just laughed. :-)
