BFO in R10/R11
Jeep I am a little confused about this. There is no space/dimple in my R11
for anything like this..also as far as I can remember the detector/avc is
used as a first audio before the af output so this would have to be changed
in order to use this tube for the bfo..the short answer to your question is
yes I did put a bfo into it but I cheated a little (a lot)..I fed a 239khz
signal from a postage stamp solidstate osc externally into the detector and
it worked fine..with a bit of imagination and some space saving underneath
the chassis you could fit a small board and power it from the filament dc'd
..this would avoid any hacking to the rx other than removing a few bathtubs
to make the space..alternately I had thought about putting a triode with a
crystal or stock bfo coil on the back dynamotor area (no dynas here)..there
is lots of space but then you're hacking..getting an 85 or 239 khz crystal
has proved impossible and the bfo coils are not very plentiful either..I
agree that the type 12 are beautifully made and work very well indeed..73 de

That's not an R-28/ARC-5.
It's "type-12." I love those rigs.
I think they're under-appreciated.
And, sorry to say, even less chance for it getting $60
at a hamfest. I've been 'festing for 40+ years and
never seen one go for more than $20 or $25 at
a hamfest.

Hi Mark - There is an R-508 currently on the Fair Radio site for $55.
https://www.fairradio.com/catalog.php?mode=search&keywords=type+12&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
I bought several (R-19 labels) from Fair about 3 years ago -before they
were cool! - for $20 each if I recall. So I'm with Dave on my hamfest
experiences as well. They are very under appreciated IMHO. They work well,
don't require Ham-mering to be useful and they sound great (transmitters
too).

I agree with Dave and others as to typical hamfest prices. The R-508/ARC is
part of AN/ARC-60. Used in light aircraft like the L-19 and in light
helicopters like the H-13. It is also the A.R.C. R-19 and used in some
civilian
light aircraft in the late 40's and 50's. I wouldn't bother to haul it to a
hamfest. Better chance of getting any more than $20-$25 on eBay.

The AN/ARC-60 was still in use in USN T-34 trainers at NAS Corpus Christi in
1972.

Gentlemen,
I have a bit of a quandary, here. I acquired a Navy R-24 receiver
that had been partially stripped and with really bad condition cotton
wiring. I elected to remove the IFT set and the "front-end coil rack
(and other usable parts). I intended to use an available coil-less
BC-453 as a conversion chassis. However, the IFTs from SCR-274-N,
although schematically same, are mechanically different. They won't
simply plug in. The mounting tab plate is rotated slightly. OK... at
least I understand the issues. Looking at the A.R.C. R-10 and R-11, I
found that the coils, although again schematically same, the coils are
not mounted via chassis plugs. They are hard-wired. So, can't do it
that way. Bottom line is, does anyone have a Navy ARC-5/R-23 in good
condition, perhaps sans IFTs? I've got this very nice, un-modified
BC-453 (no IFTs) or a perfect working condition ARC R-11 that could be
traded.
Finally, a general question: Has anyone ever installed a BFO in an ARC
R-10 or R-11? I see the space for the BFO transformer and the dimple
for an adjustment hole. Tnx.
