Both my ARC-3 transmitters say "Order No. 1048-DAY-44." And both are marked "MFP 6/45"
For the Korean War a large number of P-51 Mustangs were overhauled and fitted with new electronics before being shipped to Korea. The SCR-522's and Detrolas were removed and replaced by ARC-3 installations and BC-453's. It appears that some of the ARC-3's were painted black, although the BC-453's were left in natural metal. The BC-452's were mounted atop the ARC-3's, high up in the rear of the bubble canopy, which makes sense when you consider they needed to be hooked to the long wire antenna that went through the canopy and back to the tail.
I have no idea why some of the ARC-3's used in those airplanes were painted black, but those are about the only ones I have seen like that.
And while I was at Vandenberg AFB in the mid-late 80's I looked at a list of radio transmitters on the base and was surprised to see there were still a couple of ARC-3's listed.
