Both Miami Small Parts and McMaster Carr have small balls for sale, MSP has ruby and Sapphire, McM has glass and ceramicPrices are moderate Ball diameters are fractional ie 1/16 3/32 1/8 and others

Yes. That was the first thing that came to my mind too, when I first read
the OP's post.
I have at least a couple of derelict transmitters here in which those
glass balls are missing from at least one of the capacitors. I have no
idea what I can do about them either.
