Very similar here. We had a an "IRS" scammer call demanding -TWICE! Once as the first threat and a "follow-up as a last chance to let them "help me"!Called the AG fraud unit and they blew me off saying that unless I gave them money, there was nothing they could do. USELESS.
All the more reason that I support apple in the privacy issue. The government is NOT INTERESTED in being proactive. They would probably just use that power to spy on political enemies like Hoover did, anyway. They are trying to tell us that the parents of the California shooters "didn't know" even though they saw stacks of ammo in the house! If this is how they investigate a crime, and now they want to compromise the privacy of every citizen we are in trouble. As if the patriot act wasn't enough. Stalin would be proud!
We're on own own. folks!

We're having a lot of these phone scams in my area about money supposed owed to the IRS. I got one a few weeks ago and got so pissed that I called the Treasury Department's Office of the Inspector General. I actually spoke to the counsel for the Inspector General. He seemed to be interested and had me forward all the details to him, but I wonder if his interest was feigned just to mollify me. People could easily fall for these scams because the caller knows just enough legal jargon to make the call semi-believable.
As a former prosecutor, I can't help but think that it wouldn't be too tough for the feds to nail some of these guys by having an undercover agent play along as a victim.

Be really careful. Scammers are getting very sophisticated these days.
I recently received an email from the IRS. I clicked on the sending email address and sure enough it took me to the official Government website. But when I clicked on the email address where it said to send my reply to their request for personal data, it had a suffix location the the UK.
Of course, I deleted it and did nothing because I know that the IRS never phones or emails a taxpayer as an initial contact, that initial contact is always done via the U.S. Mail.
Same thing goes for phone scams. They have a way to program a local area phone number to show on your number ID to try and fool you into thinking its a local caller so you'll pick up even though they are calling from wherever.
The Federal government should be policing these deadbeats but they do nothing...
Anyways, be careful when asked to respond with any kind of personal information.

It has come to my attention that someone is using the E-Mail address of gzook at nethere.com asking for various items, etc. Please be advised that this is NOT me! I have absolutely no idea as to what this is about. However, if replying to that E-Mail address remember that the person, on the other end, is NOT K9STH!
